  • Gymnocalycium stenopleurum is a small chin cactus from the rocky foothills of Argentina, belonging to the Cactaceae family. It forms compact clusters of pale green stems with narrow ribs and thin spines, growing slowly over years into a tight, sculptural rosette.

The plant’s rounded, segmented body reaches only a few inches tall and wide, making it suitable for desks, shelves, and small spaces. The stems are cylindrical and pale green, marked by distinct vertical ridges that give the plant structural form. Thin spines run along the ridges in neat rows. The form remains naturally compact without pruning or shaping.

Small white or pale pink flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, emerging from the crown of the plant in rings around the upper stem. Blooms appear each year, though the plant will flower indoors only if it receives a temperature drop at night. It tolerates dry heated air from indoor heating systems.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. It grows under office LED lights and also grows well in direct sun or bright indirect light. Move it outside for summer to encourage stronger growth and deeper spine development. Gymnocalycium stenopleurum is pet-friendly and safe around cats and dogs. Propagate it from seed or by carefully separating offsets and letting them dry for several days before planting in gritty soil.

  • Gymnocalycium stenopleurum grows in direct sun but also does well under office LEDs and in low-light indoor corners.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, letting soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to once a month or less.

Gymnocalycium stenopleurum does best in well-draining cactus or succulent soil mixed with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 50-75F and requires a night temperature drop of 10-15F to bloom reliably indoors.

Gymnocalycium stenopleurum grows slowly and needs light fertilizer only once in spring and once in summer during the active season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11, surviving winter frost down to 30F. It grows year-round outdoors in southern California, Arizona, southern Florida, and Hawaii where frost does not occur.
